Quick Overview

New model Caldwell - N690 steel with a five inch blade and kydex sheath!

Matt Caldwell is a young maker working in knives full-time and attracting a following with his line of very reasonably priced tacticals. An article and very favorable field test of Matt's model #1-6 (long since sold-out) appeared in Tactical Knives magazine (March 2007, page 56). His model #1-9 was featured in the same magazine, May 2010, page 64 (using the #1-9 the reviewer cut through an 8-inch pine log in 5 minutes, 22 seconds). Matt followed the #1-6 with four, seven, nine and five inch versions of the same basic design. However all of these Series One knives are out of production and unavailable.

This piece, the new model #2-5, introduces a new pattern in a new steel. This example is from the 500 piece first production run (comes with a color photcopy cert.). It offers an overall length of 9 3/4" with a 4.90" blade that is very substantial at .250" thick and 1.60" wide. The steel is N690 stainless with a stonewashed finish (more on this in a moment). The sheath on this piece is kydex with a Tek-Lok fastener (reversible to suit left-handed users). The #2-5 features Matt's signature scales of deeply textured, 3-D machined micarta (red & black micarta on this one). This innovative handle design has been a factor in how well the whole line has been received.

Re the finish Matt says …"from a practical standpoint, I believe it's one of the best things going. It's as smooth as a mirror finish, yet it masks most of the scratches & scuff marks that will appear after heavy usage. It's not a cheap process on my end, but I like it so much personally, that I'm willing to have it done."

Pictures here include images of another model in the second Caldwell series, the #2-4, for comparison. Only the larger #2-5 is for sale in this listing.

Mint, just arrived from Matt's shop!
